Spatial transcriptomics benchmark compares leading platforms

Spatial transcriptomics has become one of the most exciting advances in genomics because it allows researchers to measure gene activity while preserving the original location of cells within a tissue. Unlike traditional RNA sequencing, which requires tissues to be broken apart, spatial transcriptomics reveals not only which genes are active, but also exactly where those genes are expressed. This additional layer of information helps scientists better understand how cells interact with one another during health and disease. Researchers from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute of Medical Research, Australia, have developed SpatialBench, a new reference dataset that compares several of the most widely used spatial transcriptomics technologies using the same biological samples.

First released in November 2024 by Anthropic, it has grown in popularity and seen broad adoption. In December 2025, MCP was donated to the Agentic AI Foundation (AAIF), under the Linux Foundation, so it will remain an open standard.
